Our research in East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) started with ethnobotany followed by vegetation ecological studies. Main research topics are drivers of biodiversity, vegetation zonation, forest regeneration, land cover change (together with Pekka Hurskainen, Helsinki) and palaeoecology (together with Herman Behling and Lisa Schüler, Göttingen). For this serves a dataset of over 2000 Braun-Blanquet plots comprising all vegetation formations of East Africa with focus on forests, since even in multi-layered and highly structured tropical montane forests this method is an excellent tool for a multitude of analyses. The only problem is: You have to know all occurring species. This gave rise to the collection of over 10,000 herbarium specimens, which were digitized in the frame of the Global Plant Initiative and are available on the JSTOR webpage (https://plants.jstor.org/compilation). Together with Markus Fischer (Bern) and Claudia Hemp we initiated the DFG research unit KiLi (Kilimanjaro under global change, https://www.kilimanjaro.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de/) as a platform for interdisciplinary tropical biodiversity research running two scientific stations on Kilimanjaro.

Some highlights: Discovery of the tallest tree and the highest located forests of Africa, disclosure of the biogeographical mystery of the missing bamboo belt of Kilimanjaro, predictors of elevational multi-taxa biodiversity gradients, physio-topographical map of Kilimanjaro, ecological isolation of Kilimanjaro, fire impact on the water balance of Kilimanjaro

In Europe my main research interests are the ecology and dynamics of boulder slopes and vegetation on dolomite in particular of relict Pine forests. Based on over 2500 vegetation plots in all vegetation types from Northern Bavaria I described the Buphthalmo-Pinetum and the Vincetoxico-Seselietum as new associations. Together with Claudia Hemp we study the correlation between Saltatoria coenoses and vegetation. With my scientific work I intend also to contribute to nature conservation, e.g. with FFH-management plans (altogether over 50 management plans and reports for nature conservation authorities). In the frame of the project “Naturnahe Wälder am Albtrauf bei Hersbruck” we are monitoring near-natural forests in northern Bavaria (together with Karl Heinlein, Hersbruck). Together with Markus Fischer (Bern) we established the biodiversity exploratory Schorfheide-Chorin as a platform for interdisciplinary biodiversity research in Germany (https://www.biodiversity-exploratories.de/).

Highligts are the discovery of microclimatic anomalies of boulderslopes and the disclosure of the long-term anthropogenic influence in dolomite-pineforests dating back to the neolithicum
